According to the Earth 911 website, Americans buy an estimated 29.8 plastic water bottles each year. Nearly eight out of 10 of these bottles end up in landfills. By recycling a single plastic bottle, it saves enough energy to light a 60-watt bulb for approximately six hours. You can recycle plastic bottles in a number of ways for reuse in the home.
Caddy
Removing the top of a plastic bottle or jug allows you to have a caddy or holder for art supplies. Use sharp scissors to cut straight across the base of the bottle's neck. Place paintbrushes, crayons, pens, pencils and other art supplies inside.
Ice Pack
Fill the plastic bottle about two-thirds of the way with cold water. Replace the top and leave in the freezer. Once frozen, they can be used as ice packs to treat injuries.
Watering Bottle
Plastic bottles can be used in your garden. Poke a few holes in the bottle and fill with water to sprinkle onto your plants. The online magazine Living a Better Life suggests filling up a plastic bottle with water and placing it upside down into a hole near your plants. This can supply the plants with water on an as-needed basis. Refill the bottle once it is empty.
Seed Starter
Remove the entire top of the plastic bottle with sharp scissors. Once you have only the base, fill it with soil. Plant your seeds in the soil and water on a daily basis. Leave the plant in a sunny and warm spot of your home. Once the plant sprouts and are tall enough, transplant to a larger container. The bottom of a plastic bottle can also be placed over seedlings to protect them from frost while outdoors. If you have small plants, you can use the base of a plastic bottle as a saucer.
