Fenugreek powder is derived from grinding the seeds of the fenugreek plant, which is an erect herb that grows in southern Europe and Asia, according to Purdue University's horticulture department. It is one of the oldest cultivated medical plants, and is used as a food, condiment and for some medical purposes.

Diabetes

According to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, fenugreek has been shown in animal studies and a few trials in humans to help diabetics by lowering blood sugar levels. Some researchers believe that the fiber contained in fenugreek helps prevent glucose absorption in the body. However, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) states that there is not enough scientific evidence to support the herb's medical use in this manner. However, this is fenugreek's most well-proven medicinal benefit.

Breastfeeding

According to the NCCAM, fenugreek is sometimes used to stimulate lactation in women who are having trouble producing milk for breastfeeding. According to Purdue, fenugreek is rich in protein, potassium, niacin and ascorbic acid.

Labor Induction

Some laboratory studies indicate that fenugreek can promote uterine contractions, which can bring on labor in pregnant women, according to Memorial Sloan-Kettering. But there's no supporting proof from clinical trials that this is the case.

Wounds and Infections

According to Memorial Sloan-Kettering, fenugreek has shown antibacterial properties in laboratory experiments, but no clinical trials have showed its efficacy in treating infection. More research is needed before fenugreek is recommended as an antibacterial agent.
