Actonel, or the generic risedronate, is a bisphosphonate derivative used for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a disease affecting the bones. The bones become thin and brittle and are susceptible to breaking easily. A physician performs a bone mineral density scan to determine if a patient has or is at risk for developing osteoporosis. Bisphosphonate derivates such as Actonel are the preferred therapy. Actonel increases the bone mineral density by decreasing the formation and breakdown of bone. Like all medications, however, Actonel may cause several side effects.

Headache

Actonel may cause a headache when treatment is initiated. The Drug Information Handbook states that 18 percent of individuals on Actonel experience headache. This side effect should begin to decrease as the body grows accustomed to the new drug. Pain relievers, such as Tylenol (acetaminophen), may alleviate the headache, but it is important to seek advice from a health care professional before taking any over-the-counter medications. If the headache does not decrease or becomes worse, consult your physician as soon as possible.

Diarrhea

Diarrhea is another known side effect that occurs with the use of Actonel. According to the Drug Information Handbook, about 16 percent of patients experience this side effect. Your physician should advise you to drink plenty of fluids and eat small meals throughout the day. Abdominal pain is also seen and occurs in up 12 percent of individuals. Any major concerns or worsening of side effects should be discussed with your physician. If you experience bloody stools or diarrhea that persists for more than three days, you should seek medical attention immediately

Pain

Joint pain is a side effect that may occur in up to 33 percent of individuals on Actonel, according to the Drug Information Handbook. Back pain is also seen, occurring in about 26 percent of patients. If you experience these side effects, talk to your physician, as she may need to switch medications.

Urinary Tract Infections

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common in patients who are on Actonel. About 11 percent of individuals may develop a UTI, reports the Drug Information Handbook. The symptoms of a UTI include pain upon urination, increased frequency and urgency of urination, and awakening from sleep to urinate. If you develop these symptoms, contact your health care provider because further medical intervention may be necessary.

Rash

Actonel may cause rash in 8 to 12 percent of individuals, according to the Drug Information Handbook. A patient may experience redness or itchiness. However, if this is accompanied by swelling, chest pain or difficulty breathing, it may be a severe allergic reaction and you should seek medical attention immediately.
