Keeping skin acne-free can be a challenge. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, 85 percent of all American teens suffer from acne each year -- and it's a myth that adults don't suffer from acne. While adults may not get the severe breakouts that teens suffer from, dermatologists estimate that 40 to 50 million Americans have some form of acne. Unfortunately, there's no guaranteed preventative measure for breakouts, but an effective home regimen can increase your chances of limiting breakouts and achieving beautiful skin.
Gentle Wash
Wash acne-prone areas a maximum of twice per day using a mild soap. While washing cleans the skin, over-cleaning can irritate and over-dry the skin. Wash using your fingertips, versus a scrubber or a washcloth, and pat dry. Scrubbing can cause skin irritation.
Use Oil-Free Products
Use oil-free lotions, cleansers and makeup to help keep your pores from clogging. Excess oil is one of the leading causes of acne, and pores clogged with oil provide a breeding ground for bacteria to form an infection. Never leave home without applying an oil-free sunscreen to maintain your healthy complexion.
Don't Touch
Try to keep oily, dirty surfaces away from acne-prone areas. It's so easy to hold your face in your hand, but your hand has oils in it that easily transfer onto your face in the process. If you hold your hand there too long, it's easy to push the excess oil down into the pores and clog them.
Hair is another thing to keep clean and away from acne-prone areas. It, too, contains natural oils, plus any products you added to it.
Clean Environment
A clean environment aids in maintaining beautiful skin. Washing your sheets at least once per week will help prevent body and face acne. Oils and bacteria transfer from your skin to your sheets and pillowcases. If left too long, they can build up and grind into your pores as you sleep.
Clean clothes that allow your skin to breathe -- such as fabrics made of cotton -- help to keep your skin fresh. Towels and washcloths should be washed after each use to prevent a buildup of bacteria.
