Body aches, chills, fever and sore throat are some of the most common symptoms of influenza, or flu. Since the flu is viral, most persons recover without prescription medication. At-home remedies for the flu can help alleviate symptoms and aid in recovery. People who are elderly, pregnant, have a chronic illness or who experience severe symptoms should seek medical treatment, however.

Rest

The body needs bed rest in order to recover from flu; staying home from work or school is recommended. This will also prevent the spread of infection to others. Taking frequent naps throughout the day and sleeping at least eight hours at night is important for recovery. Strenuous or full activity during this illness is not advisable.

Salt Water Gargle

Some persons have a sore throat with the flu. Gargling with warm water and a little bit of salt can be surprisingly soothing to the throat. Gargling should be done every few hours as necessary.

Fluids

Persons with the flu may have nausea or vomiting, or not have an appetite. This can lead to dehydration, which can worsen symptoms. At least eight 8-ounce glasses of fluid a day should be consumed. Caffeinated beverages and alcohol are not recommended. Fruit juices, herbal teas and water are the best choices.

Over-the-Counter Medications

There are over-the-counter medications available to help with symptoms. These include medications that help relieve fevers, aches, congestion and coughing. It is important to check with your doctor before taking medications, especially if you are on other prescription medications or have chronic conditions. Parents should check with the pediatrician prior to administering over-the-counter medications to their child.
