1. The Premise of The South Beach Diet
Something that you must do before engaging in any diet, let alone the South Beach Diet, is you need to find out what the premise of the diet is based on. In this cause the South Beach Diet, it is based on the fact that many carbohydrate foods send blood sugar too fast through the bloodstream, then causing the excess of insulin to further lower your blood sugar levels, leading you to crave more carbohydrates, resulting in an endless cycle of cravings and indulgence. However, this cycle and change in blood sugar is normal after eating. And for the most part your blood sugar remains in a stable range constantly, but drops slightly after eating or going too long without eating.
2. Cutting Out Too Many Carbohydrates
Since the South Beach Diet is based on such a premise, healthy and satiable carbohydrates are cut or eliminated out of your diet completely. Anytime you cut out or isolate a nutrient group, you will notice a difference in your weight and the bodies overall functioning performance. In this case the significant decrease in weight is praised because you have cut back on your carbohydrates. But in all actuality when carbohydrates are taken out of the diet, every carbohydrate that is in storage in the body comes out of storage to fuel the various organs. And other tissues release water which then is excreted through urine and creates weight loss.
3. Why All The Inconsistencies
If red flags are indications of warnings, then red flags should be shooting up everywhere when following the South Beach Diet, as it contains a few inconsistencies that in the end will leave you confused. If you are trying to find a healthy and balanced diet to follow, it should not be complicated or filled with hype of inconsistencies. For example, it is advocated not to focus on counting calories or to watch portion size, but then they say to count calories and measure out servings (refer to pages 13 and 27 in the book). This is just one example of that you can find within the South Beach Diet that can cause confusion.
4. The South Beach Diet is Not Based On Scientific Data
Though throughout the popular "The South Beach Diet" book, it touts that the book is based on scientific data, however, not once is there a place to be found that refers to a scientific journal or study. It in fact, it refers only to presentations of data made at scientific meetings. This is the complete opposite of research that does make it to publication; most, if not all, research first undergoes rigorous review by other, uninvolved investigators in the field to see if the scientific methodology is in fact sound and legit. This is not the case in "The South Beach Diet" book. It does provide sound advice, but it does so without taking into account solid scientific research, which should be taken into consideration when looking for or following a healthy and balanced diet. For example, the front cover of "The South Beach Diet" book, states "lose belly fat first." Anyone with any scientific background knows that you do not loose fat from one area of your body and that in fact the belly is the last place that you normally do loose fat from.
5. And What About Aspartame
Though aspartame is known in many studies to be dangerous and linked to diseases, such as cancer, diabetes and various other disorders, it is still advocated as a suitable substance to consume on the South Beach Diet. If you have sensitivities to any form of sugar substitute you will not want to follow the advice offered in the South beach Diet that states aspartame is good for you and does not cause any harmful side effects short or long term.
