If your child has allergies or a medical condition, a medical alert bracelet can provide life-saving information to paramedics, doctors, and other health professionals in an emergency. Considerations in choosing a bracelet for a child are different than for an adult, so consult your child's pediatrician to determine the best information to include.

Stainless Steel

Many metals traditionally used in jewelry --- sterling silver and gold, for example --- are softer metals. For a child, consider a bracelet made of stainless steel, particularly the actual medical alert tag or charm. Stainless steel is an especially good choice for active children, as it resists scratching, which may make the tag's engraving difficult to read. American Medical ID recommends a bracelet with engraving on the inside for toddlers, who may scratch their bracelets while crawling; the company also suggests laser engraving, to further ensure readability.
Sticky Jewelry makes its medical ID tags with grade 316L stainless steel. Like the more common 304 grade, 316L stainless steel is hypoallergenic, and has the added advantage of being "marine grade," meaning it will hold up better when exposed to chlorine. This may be an important consideration if your child spends a lot of time swimming.

Close Fit

A medical alert bracelet should fit your child snugly, but not uncomfortably so. A snug fit will protect the bracelet's engraving, and make it less likely to snag on toys or furniture. Several companies, including American Medical ID and N-Style ID, offer bracelets with adjustable Velcro closures. Other companies, including Lauren's Hope, will customize bracelets to the size your child needs. Check your child's bracelet regularly to ensure it continues to fit properly.

Durable

Active children need durable medical alert bracelets, so consider durable materials for the bracelet band itself, in addition a durable medal for the alert tag. Sticky Jewelry and Lauren's Hope offer several different styles of leather bracelets, as well as bracelets made with natural stone beads.

Wearable

The most carefully chosen medical alert bracelet will not help your child if she won't wear it daily. Let your child help you choose her bracelet. Sticky Jewelry offers a variety of masculine and feminine styles, including bracelets with interchangeable bands, necklaces, dog tags, and watches. American Medical ID offers a mix-and-match approach for building bracelets, sports bands, and necklaces. Lauren's Hope offers interchangeable bracelets made with traditional jewelry materials for girls, and a variety of styles for boys, including guitar-pick-shaped necklaces.

Emergency Medical Information

The engraving space on a bracelet is limited, but you may supplement the information by joining the MedicAlert Foundation. When a member needs emergency care, emergency responders may call the MedicAlert Foundation for additional information. The organization offers a variety of membership packages, as well as a variety of bracelets.
