Your home environment has a great impact on your family's overall health. To minimize your exposure to toxins and allergens, you might consider taking an all-natural approach to house cleaning. Not only will you be healthier, you will also be saving money.

Glass Cleaner

The best window cleaner is a bucket of warm soapy water and newspaper. Just add 1/4 cup of dishwashing liquid to 1 gallon of warm water. Dip a sponge into the water and wipe the window. Use a piece of newspaper to wipe and dry the window.

HEPA filter

A HEPA filter, or high efficiency particulate air filter, is a vacuum filter that traps large amounts of small particles that normal vacuum cleaners recirculate back into the air. This filter can create cleaner air in your home, especially if you have pets, live in a city or have severe allergies or asthma.

Scouring Cleanser

Mix enough baking soda with a nontoxic liquid detergent to make a paste. Use as you would any other scouring cleanser.

Kitchen Spray

Mix 1 cup water with 1/2 cup white vinegar and 5 drops tea tree oil in a spray bottle. Use on counter tops, stove, refrigerator and other kitchen surfaces.

Furniture Polish

Mix 1/2 tsp. olive or jojoba oil with 1/4 cup vinegar or lemon juice. Mix and store in a jar. Apply with a soft cloth to rub into wood surfaces.

Mildew Remover

Mix 2 tsp. tea tree oil and 2 cups water. Store in a spray bottle and shake well before use on problem areas. Do not rinse. Straight vinegar also works well for mold and mildew.

Houseplants

Keeping healthy plants around the house is a good way to keep the air in your home fresh and clean. Plants absorb carbon dioxide and create oxygen. Be sure to keep them away from small children and pets.
