Sinus pain and pressure is the result of inflamed and swollen sinus cavities, according to the Mayo Clinic. Sinus pain and pressure may result because of a sinus infection, an allergic reaction or the sudden change in temperature. The swollen sinus cavity places pressure on various parts of the face and head such as the ears, eyes and forehead. While over-the-counter or OTC drugs exist to treat sinus pain and pressure, a person may prefer using drug free ways to ease the pain and pressure. Some of the most common drug-free approaches include using humidity, hot and cold compresses, a neti pot and avoiding irritants.
Use Humidity
According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology, humidifying a dry environment can help provide relief for sinus pain and pressure. The sinuses are sensitive tissue, requiring proper moister. If the air in an environment becomes too dry, the sinuses may swell producing congestion and obstruction from breathing and proper nasal drainage. A person can use a cool midst humidifier or a vaporizer to add moister to the air. Taking a hot shower may help ease sinus pain. An individual may also use a hot pot of water by trapping the steam with a towel over her head.
Use Compresses
Use a hot and cold compress to ease sinus pain. A person with sinus pain can take a warm compress; place it over the eyes and nose region for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, he can place a cool compress on his face for 30 seconds. He can repeat this treatment three times for up to six times a day. The warmth from the hot compress will help thin and loosen any thick mucus secretions.
Use a Neti Pot
A neti pot is a unique pot designed to perform nasal irrigation. Nasal irrigation uses a saline solution to wash and cleanse the entire sinus cavity. A person using a neti pot should follow the directions by mixing the saline solution in warm water and placing it in the neti. The individual will then take the neti pot, place it on one nostril, tilt his head and allow the saline solution to empty into the sinus cavity, coming out the other nostril. He should gently blow his nose and repeat the process on the other side. If a person experiences pain or burning, he should discontinue use and seek medical advice.
Avoid Irritants
The Mayo Clinic recommends avoiding irritants to ease sinus pain and pressure. If the sinus pain and pressure occurs because of allergies, the best drug free treatment is to avoid the allergen. Other irritants aside from allergens may include pollution or cigarette smoke.
