Antidepressants are medications used to treat major depressive disorder. Signs and symptoms of depression can include feeling sad, worthless and anxious. A depressed person also typically has trouble concentrating and sleeping and may have negative feelings that could include thoughts about suicide. In order to decide on the best treatment for a patient's depression, a doctor will consider a variety of factors, including symptoms, medications taken and other medical conditions as well as any potential side effects that a new antidepressant may cause, states Depression.com. There are some general side effects that a patient may experience while taking an antidepressant drug.

Dizziness and Drowsiness

Antidepressant medications may cause dizziness and drowsiness. Users may experience an increase in fatigue and feel more tired throughout the day. Patients should use caution while driving or completing tasks that may be dangerous until they know how their medication will affect them. These side effects may diminish over time as the body adjusts to the medication. Some natural ways to combat fatigue include taking a daily nap, eating a diet higher in protein and getting some mild exercise. Taking an antidepressant in the evening may also be helpful.

Alterations in Mood and Behavior

Antidepressants may cause some people to become agitated or irritable or display other abnormal behaviors. They may cause some people to have suicidal thoughts and tendencies or to become more depressed, reports Mayo Clinic. Patients should be under the close supervision of their physician after starting their medication regimen. Patients who experience any type of alteration in their mood and behavior, or those who begin having suicidal thoughts, should seek immediate medical attention. Patients should also instruct their families and loved ones to watch for changes in their behaviors.

Sexual Side Effects

Sexual side effects may occur while taking an antidepressant. According to Mayo Clinic, sexual side effects include decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, delayed ejaculation and decreased orgasm. If bothersome, these side effects should be brought to the attention of a physician, who may recommend a change in dose or medication.
