For many people, the prime cause of acne is a buildup of the oily secretion sebum and dead skin cells. This oil can cause dirt and bacteria to be trapped in pores, clogging them and resulting in acne. In an attempt to get rid of these lesions, some people try to pop them. But picking at acne can damage the skin and lead to acne scars. However, even those who keep their hands off can develop them, as scarring is a natural part of the healing process. To eliminate your scars, you'll need dermatological intervention, but some effective at-home remedies work to minimize their appearance in the meantime.
Vitamin C and Retinoids
The topical application of retinoid (a kind of vitamin A) and vitamin C creams can smooth out scars. Applying these creams once a day can boost the production of collagen, working to fill in your scars and fade redness or irritation. Vitamin C-based creams are available over the counter; topical retinoids are available over the counter and by prescription. These creams work best on scars that are younger than six months. Application should continue until scars have faded considerably or noticeable fading has ceased.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is a common remedy for skin ailments, including acne and acne scars, and is available at most grocery stores and drugstores. Just dilute it with water before applying it to your scars each morning and evening. Soak a cotton pad in the solution and swipe it over your face. Allow the solution to sit for 15 minutes before rinsing. Your scars should be less noticeable within eight weeks' time. If skin irritation develops, discontinue use.
Chemical Peels
Chemical peels made from glycolic acid or salicylic acid can be used to strip away the top layer of dead skin cells and encourage scars to fade. They also encourage the production of collagen and new skin, helping scars fill in and making the edges of scars smoother with each application. Use chemical peels once a week for best results.
