Dark spots can occur on skin for a number of reasons. The Mayo Clinic states that they are common in people over age 40 and are often a result of years of sun exposure. Ultraviolet rays accelerate the production of a dark pigment in skin called melanin, and over several years the extra melanin becomes clumped together and dark spots form. The Mayo Clinic also points out that while most age spots are not a concern, they can resemble cancerous growths and should be checked by a doctor if you notice a change in color or shape. Dark spots can also develop in the form of unflattering tan lines or a mishap with sunless tanning cream or spray. It is possible to gradually remove harmless dark spots using home remedies.
Exfoliating
Exfoliating skin regularly will gradually remove dead skin cells and the top layer of skin. Lower layers of your skin are lighter and smoother, which make dark spots on your skin's surface less noticeable. Use an exfoliating brush or scrub once or twice a week. You can also make your own by mixing equal parts baking soda and water and scrubbing the mixture onto your skin.
Lemon and Onion
Lemon juice is acidic, which allows it to lighten skin when it is concentrated on the skin. Dip a cotton swab into lemon juice and apply it to dark spots twice a day. To remove dark spots on a large area, cut a lemon in half and rub the flesh directly onto your skin. Red onions have the same acidic properties, so you can slice a red onion and rub it on dark spots as well.
Vinegar and Orange Juice
Apple cider vinegar and orange juice work in ways similar to lemon juice and red onion. The acid lightens skin, and the enzymes and nutrients found in apple cider vinegar and orange juice are also beneficial for overall skin health. Mix 2 tsp. apple cider vinegar with 1 tsp. orange juice. Dab the mixture onto the dark spots and allow it to dry. Rinse it off with cool water and repeat this once a day.
