Coumadin (warfarin) is a medication in a class of drugs known as anticoagulants. It is used to help thin the blood and keep it from forming blood clots, which may cause stroke. Coumadin is used for the treatment of deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in the legs), and can be used following cardiac surgery or procedures to prevent the blood from clotting. It can also be used for the treatment of atrial fibrillation. It is available in tablet form. There are some side effects of the drug Coumadin that users should be aware of.
Dizziness and Headache
Dizziness and headache are side effects of Coumadin, reports Drugs.com. These side effects may lessen over time as the body adjusts to Coumadin. Users should use caution while driving until they know how Coumadin will affect them. Dizziness may be more severe when changing positions, such as going from lying down to standing up. In some cases, dizziness may be a sign of low blood pressure. Patients should monitor their blood pressure at home and know when to notify their doctor. If headache becomes severe, users can ask their physician if they can use an over the counter medication, such as acetaminophen, for pain.
Hemorrhage
One of the most serious risks associated with Coumadin treatment is hemorrhage--severe bleeding resulting in the loss of a large amount of blood--in any tissue or organ. Patients should use extreme caution to avoid falls and any other types of injury while taking Coumadin. Patients should notify their physician immediately if they notice blood in their urine or stool, cough up blood or experience bleeding gums, excessive bruising or a nosebleed that becomes chronic.
Numbness and Paralysis
Patients may experience numbness and paralysis of the extremities while taking Coumadin. They may report a tingling sensation in their limbs that may feel like pins and needles. Severe numbness and paralysis in the lower extremities may increase the risk for falls and injury, which can result in hemorrhage. Users should report any signs of numbness or paralysis to their health care provider immediately.
