Ambien CR Adverse Side Effects

Ambien CR, a brand name for zolpidem tartrate, is an extended-release medication that is prescribed to treat insomnia. This drug belongs to a group of drugs known as sedative-hypnotics, which works by decreasing brain activity in the brain to produce a calming effect; thus, it is a central nervous system depressant. It is not meant for long-term use; it should be used for about two weeks unless your physician decides otherwise. There are possible side effects from using Ambien CR.

Common Adverse Effects

This drug has frequently experienced adverse effects. Headache, the most common side effect, according to eMedTV, occurred in up to 19 percent of participants taking the drug during clinical trials. Additionally, daytime drowsiness, lethargy, or post-drugged effect was reported in up to 15 percent of participants during research. Another common side effect was dizziness, which was present in up to 12 percent of the participants. Stomach, memory and mood problems also were reported. Other side effects that were experienced between 1 to 4 percent of participants included problems with gross motor coordination; joint and muscle pain; heart palpitations; and, a spinning sensation.

Gastrointestinal Effects

Gastrointestinal cluster effects are frequently reported in people taking Ambien CR. According to eMedTV, various forms of gastric changes occurred in between 1 to 4 percent of participants such as abdominal pain, anorexia as well as constipation or diarrhea. Additional complaints associated with this drug are excess gas, gastroenteritis, and heartburn. Lastly, several participants experienced nausea, swallowing difficulties, and vomiting. These side effects are not considered serious, and typically do not require treatment.

Neuro-Psychiatric Effects

Taking this medication may produce neurological or psychiatric side effects in certain individuals. Specifically, between 1 to 4 percent of participants during clinical trials reported experiencing disorientation with hallucinations and confusion. Also, the same percentage of participants experienced drug-related anxiety, depression, or euphoria. A difficult side effect that is associated with this medication is a distinct type of memory loss; specifically, amnesia of behaviors carried out while asleep. The Mayo Clinic refers to such activities as “sleep-related“ behaviors that may include: driving a vehicle, walking, phone calling, having sex, and eating while asleep. If one becomes aware that such sleep-related behaviors are occurring after starting this medication, the doctor should be contacted immediately.

Dependence & Withdrawal

One can become dependent on Ambien CR. Indeed, one may not only become addicted, but need to take more over time in order to get the same effects, or what is known as developing a drug tolerance. With these factors in mind, then, one should not abruptly stop taking this medication, for withdrawal symptoms can result. Therefore, if a decision is made to stop taking Ambien CR , it is advised to do this gradually under the supervision of a doctor to oversee any potential health complications.
