Chronic sinus infections affect more than 30 million Americans, according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. A chronic sinus infection either lasts more than eight weeks or is recurring, according to the Mayo Clinic. The sinus cavity becomes inflamed and swollen, which can lead to nasal discharge, sinus pressure and pain, and nasal congestion. If a chronic sinus infection goes untreated, serious complications may develop.
Eye Infection
Pain and swelling around the eyes might indicate a more serious condition. Swelling around the eyes may be an indicator of an eye infection, according to the University of Maryland. Although an orbital infection is treatable, it could lead to more serious conditions. If the condition goes untreated, patients might lose eye movement and vision. An eye infection could cause permanent blindness.
Meningitis
If a person experiences a severe headache or mental confusion while suffering from a chronic sinus infection, the person may have meningitis. Meningitis is a serious condition where infection settles in the lining of the brain and the spinal cord. Meningitis can lead to death. A person showing signs of altered consciousness, visual issues, seizures and personality changes should seek medical attention immediately.
Asthma
Chronic sinus infections can cause an asthmatic reaction. The signs of an asthma attack are shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, wheezing, chest tightness and lightheadedness. If the sinus infection is causing the asthma attack, the asthma symptoms may not clear up until the infection is completely gone, according to the University of Maryland. If a person experiences these symptoms, she should seek medical attention immediately.
Bone Infection
Swelling in the forehead may be a sign of osteomyelitis (bone infection). Young males are at a higher risk of developing osteomyelitis from a sinus infection, according to the University of Maryland. The infection can spread into the immediate bone structure in front of the sinus cavity but can also spread into other facial bones. Aside from a swollen forehead, an individual may experience a fever and a headache.
