If you are looking for an alternative method of losing weight without the use of prescription medication, there are many herbal supplements available that you can choose from. Available at most local supermarkets and drug stores, these supplements are available in various forms, including pills, powders, and liquid extracts. Prior to starting a regimen of herbal supplements to promote weight loss, do your own research on the supplement and be sure to get clearance from your medical doctor.

Hoodia Gordonii

According to Herbal-Supplement-Resource.com, one herbal supplement that can assist you in losing weight is hoodia gordonii. Native to southern Africa, this herbal supplement appears to act specifically on the part of the brain that controls appetite and hunger. Similar in efffect to a natural steroid, hoodia gordonii contains an active ingredient (called P57) that seems to suppress the feelings associated with the need to overeat, while also lowering the amount of glucose in the blood. A decrease in glucose can act as a natural appetite suppressor by lowering the amount of insulin in the body, which is known for notifying the body that you are hungry. In addition, when the body experiences a drop in insulin within the blood, fat storage surrounding the muscles in the body will also be burned off as the body pulls from these deposits for additional energy. It should be noted, however, that further research must be conducted to document the consistency of these benefits. This herbal supplement should be used with caution and only under the supervision of a health-care provider.

Coleus

Another herbal supplement to consider for weight loss is coleus. According to Herbal-Supplement-Resource.com and the University of Michigan Health System, this herbal supplement may help break down fat deposits within the body and can even limit the onset of additional fat tissue development. In addition, coleus can also affect the thyroid and stimulate the body's metabolic rate to increase the way we naturally burn calories. Active ingredients within coleus also have a physiological affect on enzymes within the blood, which also aid in increasing metabolism for supplement users. Research into the consistent effectiveness of coleus is limited, however, and patients should seek the recommendation of a doctor before taking the supplement.

Guarana

The University of Michigan Health System notes that most evidence for guarana's effectiveness of in promoting weight loss in humans is based on traditional uses. Guarana comes from a vine indigenous to the Amazon basin. This herb seems to have an effect similar to caffeine, which increases fat-burning enzymes and processes within the body. Guarana may also contain ingredients that directly stimulate the central nervous system, thus increasing metabolic rate, and leads to increased weight loss. This supplement can be found in many forms, including energy drinks and pills. Side effects may include anxiety, trembling, insomnia and increased urination. You should consult your medical professional before taking this supplement.
