Bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression, is a serious, chronic brain disorder characterized by emotional highs (mania) and depressive lows. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, bipolar disorder usually appears in a person's late teens or early adulthood. Treatment for the disorder often includes medications and psychological therapy. Natural treatments for bipolar disorder are not intended to replace doctor-prescribed treatments, but may serve as helpful additions, pending doctor's approval.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3 fatty acids are healthy, essential fats the body can't create on its own. They are known to support cardiovascular health, reduce bodily inflammation and support nerve communication in the brain. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, omega-3 fatty acids may help reduce mood swings and prevent relapses in people with bipolar disorder. Numerous foods provide omega-3 fatty acids, including salmon, halibut, tuna, mackerel, sardines, ground flaxseed, walnuts and canola oil. Omega-3 fatty acids can also be attained through use of dietary supplements, such as fish oil or flaxseed oil supplements.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is an ancient healing practice that involves stimulation of specific points on a person's body, usually by inserting thin needs into the skin. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, an estimated 3.1 million adults and 150,000 children in the United States depended upon acupuncture in 2006 for treatment of pain or for health restoration. Acupuncture may also improve emotional health. Though research is still being conducted regarding the effect of acupuncture on brain illnesses, the Mayo Clinic suggests acupuncture as a safe, potentially effective treatment for depression associated with bipolar disorder. In the United States, acupuncture is approved only with use of needles that meet certain quality and sterilization standards and must be conducted by a qualified professional.
Yoga
Yoga is a practice that involves physical movements, stretches and breathing techniques geared toward uniting the mind, body and spirit. People may depend upon yoga to improve muscle tone and flexibility, relieve stress or for spiritual reasons. According to the Mayo Clinic, regular practice of yoga may help reduce or alleviate depression and mood swings caused by bipolar disorder. Though yoga is generally considered safe for all ages, numerous forms exist, some of which may suit teens with bipolar disorder more so than others. Yoga is available at yoga studios, fitness and community centers and can be conducted at a person's home once proper technique is acquired.
Natural Supplements
Numerous herbal treatments are available to teens and adults with bipolar disorder. According to the Mayo Clinic, an herb known as St. John's wort, an amino acid supplement called s-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM-e) and various Chinese herbal supplements may provide respite to people with bipolar disorder. Natural supplements for bipolar disorder pose various benefits and risks, some of which are serious. St. John's wort and SAM-e may trigger manic episodes in some people with bipolar disorder and both may interact negatively with antidepressants and other medications.
