A vertical labret piercing is a vertical version of a traditional labret piercing. A traditional labret has one visible bead on the outside of the face, in between the lower lip and chin. The other side of the jewelry rests inside the mouth, making a traditional labret piercing horizontal. A vertical labret has two visible beads; one on the bottom or slightly underneath the lower lip and one bead on the top of the lower lip. The jewelry is centered in the middle of the lower lip.

Anatomy Consultation

When wanting to receive a vertical labret piercing, you must have a consultation with a professional piercer. Depending on the piercing shop, the consultation may need to be by appointment. During the consultation, the piercer will look at the inside and outside of your lower lip, gum line and teeth placement. The piercer will ask you to make several facial expressions, like smiling and frowning, to note how your lip moves when your mouth moves. The piercer will inform you after the consultation if your anatomy is suitable for a vertical labret piercing.

Paperwork and Aftercare

The piercer copies your identification to prove your age and gives you paperwork to fill out. The paperwork is a legal document that releases the piercer and piercing shop from any liability concerning the piercing. If any terms of the document are unclear to you, ask the piercer for clarification before initialing or signing. After the paperwork, the piercer will fully explain how to take care of the vertical labret piercing and give you written instructions to take home.

Skin Preparation

The piercer attaches a lap cloth, or dental bib, to your shirt after you sit down in the piercing chair. A lap cloth has a paper front and plastic backing. You may drool during the vertical labret piercing and the lap cloth protects your shirt from getting wet. You will rinse your mouth with an antiseptic mouthwash from the piercer. An antimicrobial soap, applied to the lower lip and chin with sterile gauze, cleans the area for the piercing. The piercer marks your lip with a sterile marker, placing a dot underneath the lower lip and one dot on top, in the center.

Piercing

The piercer inserts the lip tissue into the forceps and lines up the marks. Pulling the lower lip out and away from your face with the forceps ensures that the needle does not contact any other part of the face, like the upper lip, nose or chin. After you take a deep breath in, the piercer pushes the needle through the lower lip while you breathe out. The piercer removes the forceps with one hand while holding the lip with the needle in the other. Jewelry follows behind the needle; inserted from the bottom of the lip to the top.

After the Procedure

The piercer cleans the outside and inside of the mouth with an antimicrobial soap and gauze to remove blood. If you are an excessive bleeder due to consuming products, such as caffeine, that thin the blood, the piercer applies pressure to the vertical labret piercing to help the piercing holes clot. The piercer will instruct you to stay sitting if you feel nauseous or dizzy and to stand up slowly after the feeling passes. Eating a meal before receiving the piercing helps avoid dizziness or feeling sick to your stomach. You will pay the piercer, ask any additional questions about the vertical labret piercing you may have and book an appointment to downsize the jewelry after the swelling dissipates. Some piercing shops allow walk-ins, and an appointment for downsizing jewelry is not necessary.
