Homeopathic Pain Remedies

Pain can be debilitating and can lead to depression and irritability. No matter what the cause, acute or chronic, specific homeopathic remedies can be quite effective in pain management. Arnica, Aconite and Hypericum are three remedies that are widely used for pain relief.

Hypericum

Hypericum perfoliatum, or St. John's wort, is a remedy for pain that is sharp, intense and shooting from the injured site, such as pain from sciatica or an injury to your spine or tailbone with pain that runs the length of the nerve. Hypericum type pain is often associated with depression or mental weakness after the injury. Hypericum is also good for nerve pain and pain from surgeries, dental visits, shingles outbreaks and phantom limb sensations.

Aconite

Aconitum napellus, or monkshood, is best used for sudden, intense pain with burning sensation, numbness and tingling. The pain is almost unbearable, pulsating and may have heat, redness and inflammation around the injured area. The sufferer will feel anxious and restless, worried she may not survive the pain. Use aconite when the pain is violent and you remain in shock after the trauma, exhibiting a large fear component.

Arnica

Arnica montana, or leopard's bane, is one of the best homeopathic remedies to have on hand. It is useful in reducing pain that is caused by bruising and soreness. It can greatly reduce swelling and bleeding in the area and heal bruises almost immediately if used at onset. Use arnica when you have painful sensations that are achy and deep, like a charley horse.

Dosing

Homeopathic remedies for pain should be repeated frequently in acute cases. Take remedies every five minutes to every hour for several days, and reduce the dose as symptoms resolve. For chronic pain and long-term use, remedies can be taken every day. Homeopathic remedies should be dissolved under the tongue and taken 20 minutes away from any food or drinks.
As always with acute trauma, especially car accidents and head injuries, have your doctor evaluate your condition to prevent complications and dictate proper treatment.
