A pinched nerve is compression on a nerve root caused by bones, cartilage, muscles or tendons. Pinched nerves cause pain, numbness, tingling or weakness in a focal area or into the extremities. Pinched nerves can be relieved with organic, or natural, remedies you can try at home. If home remedies do not help relieve your pain, see a physician for medicine and other treatment options, such as injections or physical therapy. In extreme cases, surgery may be needed.

Hot/Cold Compresses

Compresses can be used to offer some relief from a pinched nerve. Either a hot or cold compress can be placed on the painful area for 15 to 20 minutes. Hot compresses can help with a pinched nerve since they increase circulation in the area where the pinched nerve is. The increased circulation can help to reduce the amount of pain felt. You can make a hot compress by warming a washcloth with hot water. Make sure that the washcloth is not too hot to cause burns. Cold compresses reduce inflammation in the area. You can use a cold washcloth or an ice pack as a cold compress.

Increase Fiber

A lack of fiber in the diet can cause constipation. According to Alternative Medicine Digest, constipation can lead to worsening of pain from a pinched nerve. Increasing fiber intake will cause regular bowel movements. It will also prevent straining during a bowel movement, which is related to constipation. Fiber can be increased through fiber supplements and whole-grain breads and cereals.

Rest

You should avoid heavy lifting and excess bending, as an increase in activity can aggravate a pinched nerve. Resting will help to prevent more compression on the nerve. While some people may prefer to sit or lie down, others may find standing more comfortable. The location of the nerve that is being pinched will determine whether sitting or standing will be more comfortable.
