Exercise Treatments for Cerebral Palsy

Approximately two to three out of every 1,000 children born in the United States will develop cerebral palsy, according to the March of Dimes and CerebralPalsy.org. This condition is typically caused by a birth injury during which the baby was temporarily deprived of oxygen; however, it also can be caused by drug, alcohol and tobacco use. Cerebral palsy can cause a variety of physical limitations, but certain exercises can help people with cerebral palsy improve their physical capabilities. Always wear a helmet when participating in outdoor exercises.

Arm Cycling

Arm cycling uses a motion similar to pedaling a bicycle, except that you use your hands instead of your feet. Erogmeters, which are stationary cycling units, are used for indoor arm cycling. Specially designed arm-powered cycles are used for outdoor physical training. According to United Cerebral Palsy (UCP), arm cycling helps improve flexibility, range of motion, strength and endurance. It also increases heart and lung efficiency.

Leg Cycling

Participants can practice leg cycling on an indoor stationary bicycle or a two- or three-wheeled outdoor vehicle specially outfitted with hand-controlled gears. Indoor equipment typically features programs that control resistance. Leg cycling assists with maintaining healthy lungs and heart muscles, range of motion, flexibility, endurance and muscle strength, according to UCP.

Tai Chi

Tai chi, sometimes referred to as "moving yoga," employs sets of fluid movements that stretch the muscles and lull the mind into a mild meditative state. The slow, controlled dance-like movements of tai chi can help a person with cerebral palsy achieve greater flexibility and range of motion, according to UCP. It can also help maintain bone strength.

Jogging

Jogging or fast walking can provide aerobic activity without placing excessive strain on the knee joints. According to UCP, properly fitting athletic footwear is key to physical improvement and minimizing risk of injury. Jogging helps people with cerebral palsy build endurance and muscle strength, increase lung and heart efficiency and maintain bone strength.
