Some people experience sensitive skin regularly, while others may find that they have sensitive and peeling skin as a result of a sunburn or harsh weather conditions. Low humidity and dry heat can cause skin peeling, as well as frequent cleansing with harsh soaps. Sensitive and peeling skin is common on the face, arms and legs but can develop anywhere. It can be accompanied with warmth, redness and pain. Home remedies may relieve sensitive and peeling skin, but if it is accompanied by itching, scaling or appears to be infected, see a dermatologist. These symptoms could indicate conditions such as eczema, poison ivy or allergies.
Showering and Bathing
Washing sensitive and peeling skin too frequently can remove natural oils and dry out skin even more. The American Academy of Dermatology suggests washing skin only once a day. Take short showers and baths that last about 15 minutes or less, and use warm instead of hot water that can make your skin dry. When you are finished with your shower or bath, pat your skin dry with a towel instead of rubbing it. Rubbing your skin with a towel can make the peeling worse.
Moisturizing and Compresses
Applying moisturizer immediately after showering or bathing will seal in moisture. Use a cream-based moisturizer after showering, in the morning, before bed and whenever your skin feels dry. Natural moisturizers also can be used, such as baby oil, olive oil and aloe vera gel. Simply rub them onto your skin and concentrate on peeling areas. Apply a cool compress to the peeling skin, such as a wet cloth, to provide relief and prevent the skin from peeling further.
Other Remedies
The American Academy of Dermatology advises that those with sensitive skin should only use skin products that do not contain fragrances or alcohol. These ingredients can irritate sensitive skin and make peeling worse. Instead, look for skin care products that are natural and contain chamomile or aloe. You also can try using a humidifier in your home. Humidifiers push steam or mist into a room to add moisture to the air, which is especially beneficial during winter months when indoor heat makes the air dry. If your skin is dry and peeling, plug a humidifier into your room and leave it on while you are sleeping. Use a cool mist humidifier around children so they do not risk burning themselves near hot water and steam.
