Acid Reflux Home Treatment

Acid reflux occurs when the stomach's acid or bile travels back up into the esophagus and throat. This causes the lining of the esophagus to become irritated and painful. It is a common digestive issue that affects many people. Acid reflux is not discriminatory. It can occur at any age and to either gender. Because acid reflux can happen day or night, it is important to understand what causes it and how it can be remedied from home.

Acid Reflux Symptoms

According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms of acid reflux may include burning in the chest and throat, a hoarse throat, dry cough, swallowing difficulty, regurgitation of food or chest pain. Some people may develop the sensation of lump in the throat and a sour taste in the mouth. Acid reflux can interfere with daily activities and even sleep. Fortunately, many of these symptoms are temporary and can be managed at home.

Causes of Acid Reflux

Acid reflux can be triggered by certain foods. The Dr. Weil website says that everyone who experiences acid reflux has specific foods that trigger an attack. Common triggers include tomato sauce, onion, mint, fatty foods, alcohol, caffeine, garlic and fried foods. When acid reflux is persistent, the sphincter, the muscular valve of the lower esophagus, relaxes too much. This prevents it from closing properly, allowing stomach acid and digestive enzymes to regurgitate.

Home Remedies

The American College of Gastroenterology recommends several home remedies for acid reflux. Elevate the head of your bed with a wedge or by positioning blocks under the top bed legs. Acid is less likely to travel up from your stomach if you are in an upright position. Avoid smoking and second-hand smoke inhalation. Tobacco irritates the stomach and prevents the sphincter in the lower esophagus from functioning properly, making it easier for acid to travel back up into the esophagus.

Alternative Treatments

Because anxiety and stress can exacerbate acid reflux symptoms, the Mayo Clinic recommends learning relaxation techniques like autogenic relaxation or progressive muscle relaxation. The autogenic relaxation technique uses body awareness and visual imagery to eliminate stress. The progressive muscle relaxation technique requires a person to tense and then relax each specific muscle group. Some herbal remedies, such as slippery elm, licorice or chamomile, may offer relief. Get a doctor's approval first.

When to Seek Medical Treatment

As the Mayo Clinic explains, a doctor's treatment should immediately be sought if chest pain is accompanied with arm or jaw pain or shortness of breath. These symptoms could be a sign of a heart attack. In addition, if acid reflux symptoms are severe or occur more than two times a week, a doctor should be consulted. He may find an underlying cause or prescribe a more appropriate treatment option.
