Eye ailments are common in adults and sometimes found in children. There are usual complaints in adults such as blurry vision when reading or headaches associated with eyestrain. Eye checkups along with a diagnosis by an ophthalmologist will give the person the correct treatment he needs to take care of the eyes. Eyesight also tends to decrease as people age, causing blurry vision nearby or far away. Common eye problems tend not to be serious, though other less common diseases, such as glaucoma, are.
Redness
Eye redness can occur for a number of reasons. For example, tiredness and eyestrain from long use working on a computer or with papers may cause the person's eyes to become bloodshot and red. If she is exposed to the sun and dust for a long time or if there is a foreign body in her eye, she may experience this problem, too. Allergic reactions and trauma to the eyes, as well as crying, can make the vessels in the eyes become more prominent. Straining and coughing also may cause it.
Infections and Inflammation
Eye infections and inflammation can occur in the person's eyes, just as in any other location on his body. Symptoms of either of these ailments may include itching, vision problems, a discharge from the eyes and crusting around the eyelid. Blepharitis is a common inflammation of the eye that occurs near the eyelashes caused by bacteria on the skin. Conjunctivitis is an irritation of the conjunctiva, which also is referred to as pinkeye. Bacteria, allergies or simple eye irritation may cause it. It can be quite contagious, if caused by a bacterium. The treatment is ophthalmic antibiotics.
Eye Bumps
Styes are bumps can form on the eyelids. These may be caused by an inflammation of the oil gland on the edge of the eyelid. It usually appears red and is tender when touched. Bacteria infects the oil gland which produces the stye. Styes are similar to acne, which is found on the face and other parts of the body. They may be treated with ophthalmic antibiotics.
Myopia
Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a condition in which the person has problems seeing objects far away. He may get headaches from myopia because he is straining the eyes to focus upon distant objects. This common eye problem is hereditary. Nearsightedness usually is corrected with prescription glasses or contact lenses.
Hyperopia
Farsightedness is known medically as hyperopia. This is a condition of the eye in which the person has difficulty viewing objects close by. Hyperopia, like myopia, can induce headaches through eyestrain and may be corrected with glasses and contact lenses.
