According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology (AAO), millions of Americans suffer from hay fever (allergic rhinitis). Hay fever is an allergic reaction that produces flu-like symptoms, such as nasal discharge, a runny nose and sinus congestion. The three most common causes of hay fever are pollens, household allergens (pet dander and dust mites) and molds, according to the AAO. If you suffer from hay fever symptoms, you may want to see an eye, nose and throat specialist for proper diagnosis and treatment.
Avoid Allergens
The National Library of Medicine states that the best way to treat hay fever is to avoid the allergens causing the reaction. If you are allergic to mold, you should maintain a dry and mold-free environment by paying special attention to mold-prone areas. Bathrooms, basements and under sinks are prime places for mold growth, due to high humidity and low light. Using chlorine bleach will kill most mold and mildew. If you have a pollen allergy, you should remain indoors and run your air conditioner to circulate and filter the air. After being exposed to the outdoors for an extended period of time, you should change clothing and possibly shower to remove any pollen particles. If you have a pet allergy, you should avoid having pets or coming in contact with pets.
Use OTC Medications
The Mayo Clinic says that if you have hay fever, you can use over-the-counter (OTC) medications to prevent and treat the symptoms of your hay fever. Antihistamines and decongestants are the most common OTC drugs used to treat hay fever. Using a 24-hour antihistamine during allergy season can reduce the number of symptoms you will experience, according to the Mayo Clinic. Antihistamines restrict the amount of histamine allowed in the bloodstream, reducing allergy symptoms. Decongestants are used to treat nasal congestion and sinus pressure pain by reducing swelling in the sinus cavity. You should talk to your doctor before using any OTC medication.
Use a Neti Pot
The National Library of Medicine says that a nasal wash (Neti pot) may be helpful in removing allergens from the sinus cavity. A Neti pot is shaped like a teapot and is used to rinse the nasal cavity, using a saline solution. A Neti pot is filled with a warm saline solution and poured into one nostril. Gravity pulls it through the entire sinus cavity, removing excess mucus and irritants. After pouring it through one nostril, you should gently blow your nose and repeat on the other nostril. If you experience burning or pain using a Neti pot, you should discontinue use and talk with a physician.
