Soccer and softball require different skills from their respective participants, and as a result, the equipment the players are required to use differs too. Although both sports require players to wear cleats, the design of these shoes is markedly different for each sport.
Purpose
The purpose of soccer and softball cleats is to provide players with traction to aid their stability and performance. However, while soccer cleats focus specifically on aiding performance on grass, softball cleats must stand up to use on a variety of conditions, from grass to mud to coarse dirt depending on a player's field position.
Sporting Demands
Softball cleats are designed primarily to aid players in transferring power onto the field, particularly over short distances, so the focus for softball shoes is very much on aiding athletic performance. The soccer cleat has the more specific need of helping players to carry out a range of ball control functions accurately and with power. These different goals are reflected in the design of each shoe.
Design
Softball shoes tend to be much bulkier than the soccer shoe with added width in the frontal sole region comparable with a training shoe. This added width helps to transfer extra power into the key areas used for sprinting, helping athletes to run between bases quickly and to accelerate after hitting the ball. Soccer shoes are much lower profile in their design. They focus on providing added feel and sensitivity for players so they can address the ball effectively.
Protection Levels
The key difference in the protection levels offered between softball and soccer cleats is in their various levels of ankle protection. Softball cleats traditionally offer high levels of ankle protection to combat the increased instability of dirt surfaces and the sliding actions of players between bases. Soccer cleats have less need for this level of protection and uniformly have low ankle protection to allow for added agility and foot movement.
Cleats
The actual cleats attached to soccer and softball shoes have both similarities and differences. Softball and soccer cleats can be manufactured from molded plastics, metal or a combination of both, and can be fixed or detachable. However, softball cleats tend to be jagged and placed in horizontal bands around the toe, middle and heel of the shoe to improve power distribution. Soccer cleats tend to be smooth and are not permitted in the toe region of the shoe. Soccer cleats focus more on placement around the perimeter of the shoe to give added traction when the shoe is turned on edge during kicking.
