The power of positive thinking is often under-appreciated. It is often used as a tool to help individuals combat depression, but there are many more benefits than elevating your mood. According to the Mayo Clinic, positive thinking has numerous benefits for individuals, including an increased average life span, lower rates of depression and distress, a stronger immune system, healthier mental states, a reduced risk of heart disease, and improved coping and stress management skills. Learning how to implement positive thinking in your life can yield many short- and long-term benefits.

Keeping Positive Company

Who you spend your time with can dictate what kind of an attitude you have, or how easy or difficult it is for you to maintain a positive attitude and outlook. You can help yourself out by surrounding yourself with positive people who are supportive of your goals and aspirations and can hold you accountable for your actions while offering advice on how to improve. Negativity---particularly negative attitudes directed toward your effort to improve your disposition---can hamper your efforts to think positively, and can heighten your stress levels or derail your efforts to change entirely.

Improve Your Lifestyle

You will find it easier to maintain a positive mind when you keep your body healthy. Do this by exercising at least three times each week---exercise helps release mood-improviding neurotransmitters like serotonin and relieve you of stress. You should also get ample amounts of sleep each night and eat a healthy, balanced diet daily.

Be Conscious of Your Mood

It can be easy to drift off into negative mindsets, particularly early on in your efforts to change your outlook. Mayo Clinic reports that it's good to stop periodically throughout the day to evaluate what kinds of thoughts you are having. If you find yourself having negative thoughts, it can be helpful to try and put a positive spin on them or to try and be conscious of the ways you are being negative and avoid them as your day wears on.

Turn Negatives Into Positives

You can reinforce positive thoughts by making sure you're putting a positive spin on what you say. Mayo Clinic advises individuals seeking a change in mentality to avoid saying anything to themselves that they wouldn't want to say to other people. Negative thoughts should be evaluated and responded to rationally with positive affirmations. For example, instead of saying you can't do something because you've never done it before, approach the task enthusiastically because you have the opportunity to learn something new.
