Doctors usually prescribe a colon cleanse prior to surgery or medical tests to evacuate as much waste material as possible from the body. In addition, people have been availing themselves of colon cleanses and detox for years as a way to rid the body of toxins and any fecal material that may have adhered to the walls of the colon. While colon cleanses are not usually dangerous, according to gastroenterologist Michael Picco of the Mayo Clinic, they can cause dehydration, so it's important to drink lots of water while on a cleanse. In addition, if you have any medical issues or take medication, consult with your health care provider prior to beginning any detox program.

Prune and Apple Juices

By far the easiest way to clean out your colon is to get more fruit into your diet. The experts at colonzone.com suggest starting a cleanse program by using a combination of prune and apple juices to relieve constipation, which may be all you need to clean your colon. The website suggests drinking two to three cups of prune juice before breakfast. Then 30 minutes later have a cup of apple juice. An hour after that have another cup of apple juice. This is enough to relieve constipation in most people and get the bowels moving smoothly.

Juice Fast

Juice fasts can be performed for several days, although most people shoot for a three-day fast, usually over a long weekend or vacation from work. The juice fast is healthy, but it can tire you out. Drink fresh fruit and vegetable mixes throughout the day while avoiding other foods. Dr. Mehmet Oz's green drink is one beverage to consider drinking throughout a juice fast. Mix the following ingredients in a blender and drink throughout the day: two cups of spinach, two cups of cut-up cucumbers, one package of celery, 1/2-tsp. ginger root, one medium bunch of parsley, juice of one lime, two tablespoons lemon juice and two apples. Dr. Oz says it's fine to add more apples in the beginning to make the drink sweeter, as long as it's still green. Intersperse your green drink with other fresh juices, including both fruits, such as grapefruits and lemons, and vegetables, such as carrots and kale.

Master Cleanse

If you're serious about cleansing, try the Master Cleanse, a seven-day detox program. The Master Cleanse was developed by Stanley Burroughs and requires that people drink a lemonade mixture several times per day for at least seven days. The lemonade is made from two tbsps. of freshly squeezed lemon juice, two tbsps. of Grade B maple syrup and a pinch of cayenne pepper mixed with 10 oz of filtered water. In addition, you'll flush the colon with a saltwater mix or by drinking a laxative tea.
