Adult coed softball is a popular sport, with office teams or groups of friends competing in recreational leagues throughout the United States. Adult coed softball is not only a fun, social activity, it is also an opportunity to incorporate physical and exercise into your lifestyle in a fun and enjoyable environment.
Teams
A softball team roster is limited by league rules. In the city of Fresno, California, teams are permitted up to 20 players on the roster. Players must be 18 years or older to play on an adult coed softball team. Teams start a game with 10 players, four of which must be female. Male and female players are required to alternate in the batting order. If a softball team cannot field eight players or more the game will be declared a forfeit.
Pitching
A softball pitcher must pitch underarm with one foot on the pitching rubber at the point of release. Three strikes called by the umpire result in an out, with four balls allowing the batter to walk to first base. A pitch that hits a batter will result in the batter walking to first base.
Hitting and Running
Every ball hit into fair play requires the batter to run to first base. A batter is safe if he gets to first base before the fielding team touches the base with a ball in their hand or tags the runner. Sliding is permitted at every base except first base. No base stealing is allowed in adult coed softball. A player scores a run by rounding the bases and reaching home plate. If a player clears the outfield wall a home run is scored, with a run scoring for the batter and every runner who rounds the bases.
Game Regulations
Before an adult coed softball game each softball team must provide the umpire with an acceptable standard game ball. A game is allowed a 10 minute grace period before a forfeit will be awarded by the umpires. A batting lineup must be provided to the home plate umpire before the game begins. A game lasts seven innings or 55 minutes, whichever comes first. Four completed innings makes a legal game where a result is declared. Teams are separated into leagues based on ability level, a win will give a team two points, a tie game one point and no points are awarded for a loss. Seasons will often end with a playoff tournament based on regular season standings.
