According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology, 25 percent of American adults are habitual snorers, and 45 percent snore at least occasionally. Snoring is caused by obstructed nasal passages due to illness or allergies, physical conditions such as a deviated septum or poor tongue and throat muscle tone. Herbal remedies can be useful in controlling snoring caused by nasal congestion, but seek medical attention to rule out serious conditions before trying natural remedies.
Eucalyptus
Traditionally, eucalyptus has been used to treat colds, asthma, nasal congestion, coughs and sore throats due to its anti-inflammatory, decongesting and antibacterial properties. A study published in the 2004 issue of Laryngoscope suggested that one of the active ingredients found in eucalyptus, cineole, was useful in relieving the symptoms of sinusitis by reducing the production of mucus. This suggests that eucalyptus oil may also be useful in treating snoring caused by congestion and inflammation of the nasal passageway. Treatment options include using eucalyptus oil as an inhalant or applying topically before going to bed. To use as an inhalant, add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to hot water or a vaporizer and inhale the steam. To use topically, mix three to four drops of eucalyptus oil with a carrier oil such as olive oil and apply it to the skin below your nose.
Peppermint
Peppermint is a plant originating in Europe and Asia. Menthol is the main active ingredient in peppermint. Menthol is known for its decongestive properties and is often used in cold medicines as an expectorant to thin mucus. Snorers can add 1 tsp. dried peppermint leaves to 1 cup hot water to create a tea for drinking before bedtime. Adults can also add three to four drops of peppermint oil to hot water as an inhalant before going to bed. Peppermint can also be combined with eucalyptus oil.
Marjoram
Marjoram is a member of the Origanum family and is related to the herb oregano. Medicinally, marjoram has traditionally been used to treat disorders ranging from colds to headaches to stomach aches. Although there are no scientific studies to support this claim, herbalists believe marjoram is an effective herb for treating respiratory illnesses, which could decrease snoring by increasing air intake. One treatment option is to add several drops of marjoram essential oil to a warm water bath and take a 15-minute soak before bed. The most commonly suggested treatment method is to open a bottle of essential marjoram oil next to your bed an hour before bedtime and allow the scent to permeate your room while you sleep.
