Detoxamin is an over-the-counter drug containing edetate calcium disodium, or EDTA. This substance was first approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1953 for chelation therapy. This treatment is used to remove toxic metals from the body. Over the years, patients have had access to many different types of EDTA treatments. Detoxamin offers benefits of these treatments, while providing some additional advantages over other methods of chelation therapy.
Health Benefits
Many physiological and psychological symptoms emerge as a result of toxic metal poisoning. Detoxamin is used to reduce metals in the body acquired through natural exposure to modern environments. According to the State of New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, high levels of mercury or lead in the body can lead to irritability, digestive disorders or pain, problems with the nervous system, fatigue and other symptoms. Detoxamin is advertised as a treatment for chronic fatigue, high blood pressure, heart disease, prostate health and other common conditions related to aging and long-term exposure to heavy metals. Its primary ingredient, EDTA, was first approved for this purpose in 1953.
Non-intravenous Use
Detoxamin is administered via rectal suppositories. For most of the twentieth century, EDTA chelation therapy was administered intravenously (IV). IV EDTA therapy is more expensive and invasive than Detoxamin, and is additionally an inconvenient option for many patients. A 2007 article in the Journal of the American Nutraceutical Association compared the effects of IV EDTA treatment to the rectal suppositories used in Detoxamin dosing. The study concluded that the Detoxamin method was equally effective as IV therapy in exposing the body to EDTA. The study's lead doctor states that Detoxamin's EDTA actually resides in the bloodstream and body tissue longer than IV or oral dosing, which offers greater health benefits.
Readily Available
While IV treatments and other anti-aging products often require a prescription, Detoxamin may be purchased without a prescription. Anyone who wishes to try heavy metal detox for the improvement of many symptoms can use Detoxamin. Dr. Rita Ellithorpe, MD advocates the use of Detoxamin for an overall increase in quality of life and to "achieve better health." It is important not to exceed recommended dosages. If you are experiencing symptoms, always consult a physician or a health care professional before taking any supplements.
