Like many electronic devices, hearing aids must be cleaned and protected. Since hearing aids are inserted into the ear and often worn for extended periods of time, they're susceptible to dirt and earwax. Hearing aid users should use tools recommended by the manufacturer when cleaning hearing aids; otherwise, the warranty could become void.
Step 1
Confirm with the prescribing doctor or the manufacturer that the hearing aid cleaning kit is acceptable for the device model.
Step 2
Remove the device from the ear. Now is a good time to use a cotton swab to remove any debris from the ear. Don't insert the swab into the ear canal, but use it to gently wipe away any visible residue and wax.
Step 3
Pry any visible pieces of wax from the hearing aid using the wax pick. Avoid pushing pieces of wax further into the crevices of the device.
Step 4
Wipe the exterior of the hearing aid with a cleaning cloth.
Step 5
Remove the battery using the battery compartment opener or a small pointed tool from the cleaning kit. Use the cleaning brush to remove any dirt or debris from the battery slot.
Step 6
Wipe the battery with the cleaning cloth and return it to the hearing aid. Close the hearing aid compartment.
Step 7
Remove the ear mold, or piece that goes over the top of the ear to hold the hearing aid in place. Not every type of hearing aid has an ear mold.
Step 8
Wash the ear mold with soap and water. Rinse it thoroughly.
Step 9
Position the tube blower over or inside the ear mold, depending on the structure of the device. Squeeze the bulb of the blower to force water out of the ear mold tube. Allow the pieces to dry overnight.
