Ayurveda has been practiced in India for over 5,000 years as a holistic approach to a balanced and healthy life. It combines meditation, exercise and herbal remedies to restore and maintain the balance of your body's three energies: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Research into the effects of ayurvedic herbs is sparse, so the evidence that they work as claimed is mostly anecdotal. Still, most of the herbs are harmless, so trying them will not hurt you.

Cholesterol

Many men have problems with high cholesterol. If you are one, you can complement the treatments prescribed by your doctor with ayurvedic herbs. The herb guggul has been shown to reduce the amount of cholesterol produced by your liver. Indians take the herb to lower their trigylceride and low-density lipoprotein--LDL, or "bad" cholesterol--levels and raise their levels of high-density lipoprotein--HDL, or "good" cholesterol. Fenugreek is another herb that you can take for the same purpose. Fenugreek seeds have a lot of fiber, which may prevent the intestines from absorbing too much dietary cholesterol. If taking these herbs does help lower your cholesterol, you can expect an improvement in your arterial and heart health.

Sexual Function

Practitioners of ayurveda believe that certain herbs act as aphrodisiacs. These might help if you experience decreased libido or erectile dysfunction. Kali musli is believed to be such an aphrodisiac. Also known as Curculigo orchioides, kali musli grows in the forests of India and is disappearing rapidly due to over-harvesting, according to Purdue University's Center for New Crops & Plant Products. Not only might the herb improve your sex life, practitioners of ayurveda believe that it has many side benefits. These include a warming effect, stimulation of appetite and effective treatment of fatigue and blood-related disorders.

Arthritis Pain

Many men suffer from arthritis and other conditions that cause inflammatory joint pain. Practitioners of ayurveda claim that a mixture winter cherry, boswellia and turmeric reduces arthritis pain and can even restore some mobility to affected joints. This herbal remedy, combined with yoga exercises, is worth trying for men whose active lifestyles have resulted in the painful deterioration and inflammation of joints common in arthritis sufferers.
