The many different types of yoga available can make it difficult for newcomers or even seasoned veterans to choose a yoga class. Though different types of yoga vary in their approach, any yoga that incorporates physical postures, or asanas, is based on the tradition of Hatha yoga, a practice that was originally intended to prepare the body for long periods of meditation. Different types of yoga may also incorporate other yogic elements, such as meditation, breath control or chanting.
Iyengar
According to Yoga Journal, most yoga classes in the United States are based on Iyengar yoga, which incorporates the use of props such as straps and blocks to help students properly access postures. Developed by B.K.S. Iyengar, Iyengar classes focus on proper alignment, and poses are held longer than in other styles of yoga to help students learn the subtleties of each posture.
Bikram
Suitable for all levels, Bikram yoga is practiced in a heated room to allow for increased flexibility and greater release of toxins through sweat. Bikram yoga uses a patented series of 26 postures that is designed to work every muscle in the body and provide the greatest benefit to internal organs.
Ashtanga
Ashtanga is a physically demanding style of yoga that uses six series of poses, or vinyasa, that increase in difficulty. Ashtanga classes are fast-paced, leaving no time for adjustment. Previous yoga experience is usually recommended. In some Ashtanga classes, students work at their own pace under the guidance of an instructor.
Jivamukti
Developed in 1984 by David Life and Sharon Gannon, Jivamukti yoga combines a vigorous physical practice with intellectual teachings in order to promote greater spiritual awareness. Each class focuses on a theme of Yoga philosophy, which is supported by Sanskrit chanting, readings, yoga postures sequences, music and breathing exercises.
Integral
Founded in 1966 by Sri Swami Satchidananda, Integral yoga combines a gentle asana practice with guided relaxation, breathing exercises, chanting and meditation. Integral yoga focus on traditional yoga practices while emphasizing self realization and selfless service to others.
Kripalu
Developed by Amrit Desai over a 20-year period, Kripalu yoga involves three stages of practice that uses asanas to develop deeper concentration, thought control, and the release of physical and mental tensions. The Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health is located in western Massachusetts and draws 30,000 visitors a year for retreats, workshops and teacher trainings.
