Ear wax is a sticky, protective substance in the ear that prevents foreign objects, like dust and bacteria, from entering the ear and damaging the eardrum. Sometimes wax builds up, creating hearing loss, discomfort and ringing in the ear. If you experience symptoms of ear wax blockage, use a tool to carefully clean the ear.

Washcloth

KidsHealth.com recommends using a washcloth while in the shower or bath to carefully wipe the ear rather than using a cotton swab. Cotton swabs may damage the eardrum, particularly if they are poked into the ear forcefully. Instead, wet a washcloth with warm water, carefully rub around the outside and slightly on the inside of the ear, and rinse your ear with warm water every time you shower or bathe. After getting out of the shower, carefully rub the ear with a towel to remove any excess water, or blow it dry with a hair dryer on the cool setting, recommends the Mayo Clinic.

Baby Oil

Applying a small amount of baby oil into the ear canal may help loosen any wax that has gotten stuck in the ear, advises the Mayo Clinic. Using a clean eyedropper, remove a small amount of baby oil from the bottle, then carefully place a few drops directly into the afflicted ear. Baby oil will soften the ear wax, making it easier to remove in the shower or with an ear syringe. Apply baby oil into the ear canal once a day for up to five days.

Ear Irrigation Syringe

If you are suffering from impacted ear wax, purchase an ear irrigation syringe at the drugstore. An ear irrigation syringe is a small plastic or rubber syringe that can be filled with liquid. Fill the syringe with warm water, and then carefully squeeze the water into the clogged ear. Next, drain the ear of water and excess wax by tipping your head over the sink. The Mayo Clinic recommends irrigating the ear after using baby oil to soften the wax.
