Conflict may arise for many reasons. One way to help resolve conflict is to look at the reason for the conflict. Conflict can create negative effects on a relationship, on an organization or in a family. To resolve any type of conflict, it is important to identify common goals, communicate effectively and allow both sides to have balanced representations of their views, feelings and values.
Insufficient Information
At times, conflict can arise because neither party has enough information or only has misinformation. This is usually a result of poor communication. In this case, it is important that both sides recognize the data that is not being communicated, communicate that data and find a way to agree on what the data is representing. Sometimes, people think differently; data may need to be presented in several ways so that there can be a common understanding of what the data is showing.
Special Interests
Sometimes a conflict happens because one or both sides have special interests in mind. They may have a particular goal that is different from the other person's goal. In this case, the two sides should try to identify what a goal that is common to both parties and how that will benefit both parties or the overall organization, rather than just one side. Individual goals can sometimes get in the way of resolving a conflict. Identifying common goals help to create solutions to a conflict.
Differing Values
When two sides have different values, sometimes this can result in conflict. People have different backgrounds, cultural values and are brought up differently. If one or both sides are not open to these differences, it can result in a conflict about values. Resolving this type of conflict can be facilitated by both sides being open with the understanding that differences exist. Acceptance that there are differences can be difficult. Making no progress because of conflict can be even more difficult.
Relationship and Personality Issues
Conflict can be fueled by a problems related to personalities, or strong emotions related to the topic. Relationships between the two parties can be affected by different issues, resulting in poor communication and issues that are difficult to resolve. Making it possible for both parties to communicate in a balanced way is important. In addition, acknowledging feelings and emotions is an important step in resolving this type of conflict.
