Those who believe that colon cleansing is an important part of digestive health sometimes recommend consuming a combination of water and sea salt, which they say helps remove toxins and fecal matter from your colon. Keep in mind that most physicians do not recommend colon cleansing. The Mayo Clinic states that the digestive system naturally eliminates waste and that colon cleansing puts you at risk for serious side effects, such as electrolyte imbalance and dehydration.

Step 1

Fill a 1-liter container with room-temperature water. Add 2 tsp. sea salt and mix well.

Step 2

Consume the entire liter of saltwater in one sitting. You may need to shake the mixture repeatedly while sipping to keep it well-blended. The solution may make you gag from the unpleasant taste, so you should try to drink it quickly. Since it will stimulate your bowels, the best time to drink the concoction is in the morning.

Step 3

Lie down. Lie on your right side while you wait for the cleanse to stimulate the bowels. The MasterCleanse.org website recommends waiting several minutes after you have the urge before you go to the bathroom. Since saltwater is not digestible, the solution is expelled during your bowel movements. Expect to have approximately three to seven bowel movements after consuming the saltwater flush.

Tips and Warnings

  • The cleanse is typically done for four to 14 days in conjunction with a lemonade fast. Each morning you perform the flush, then during the day you sip a concoction of lemon juice, maple syrup, water and cayenne pepper.
  • Drink plenty of water while doing any type of colon cleansing program to prevent dehydration. Consult your physician before attempting a colon cleanse.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 tsp. sea salt
  • 1 liter water
