Many people turn to waxing and plucking to get rid of unwanted eyebrow hair, but some suffer unwanted hair loss due to medical conditions, medications or medical treatments such as chemotherapy. When the hair loss is temporary, cosmetic approaches can help. Longer term solutions also are available.
Medications
Medications may be prescribed to treat hair loss above the eyes. The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases says corticosteroids can be injected into the brow area, taken orally or applied as an ointment. New hair growth may appear in one to two months. Topical minoxidil, often known by the brand name Rogaine, may also be used on the brow. With daily use, new hair may growth may appear in about 12 weeks.
Hair Transplants
If eyebrow hair loss is permanent, consider a hair transplant. Woman Junction says hair transplants have proven to be "quite beneficial" for people who are concerned about thinning or complete loss of hair on the brows. During a transplant, hair that is similar in length, thickness, texture and color is moved from other parts of the body and surgically implanted in the face. Expect it to take three to six months for the transplanted hair to start growing and blending in naturally with the eyebrow.
Cosmetic Approaches
For some people, all it takes is an eyebrow brush or pencil to give thin brows a more natural appearance. These makeup products are readily available at both discount and department stores. If you're not sure how to use them most effectively, talk to a beauty consultant at the store's makeup counter. The Methods of Healing website also suggests considering a change of hairstyle. Switch to bangs or a hairstyle that helps to cover your forehead and makes the hair loss less noticeable. If you wear contacts, you might want to switch to glasses for a while. The rims may help to conceal hair loss. Whatever you do, be sure to go easy on the eyebrow area and avoid any plucking or threading until your eyebrows are growing back again as you desire.
Home Remedies
Methods of Healing and the Home Remedies websites suggest giving natural remedies a try. The sites say you can massage castor oil, olive oil or coconut oil onto the brow to promote hair growth. Home Remedies also claims that dipping a ball of cotton in milk and rubbing it onto the eyebrows can help. It says the protein and vitamins in milk nourish the hair roots and aid in hair growth. While natural remedies may not be harmful, the National Institutes of Health warns that many have not been thoroughly tested scientifically for effectiveness. Home Remedies does say that eating lots of fruits, vegetables and protein-rich foods may help, since eating well can make your hair--and eyebrows--look healthier.
