Every sport has an element of danger, and archery is no exception. Archery is a fun and exciting sport that challenges your strength and accurateness as you shoot arrows at a target using a bow. You want to end up with you arrow stuck into the bull's-eye, however, and not into your body, so be sure to take these precautions to stay safe while you shoot on a range.
Shoot at a Well-Designed Range
When you go shooting, pick a range that has been set up with safety in mind. When there are many people shooting arrows at targets, there should be lines marked on the ground so archers know where it is safe to stand while people are shooting, and where the arrows are being fired. According to the site ArcheryWeb, there should be 30 degrees of safe zone on both sides of shooting spaces and 20 yards of safe zone behind the targets if they are not already in front of a wall or natural blockage. Also, be sure the ground surface of your archery range is one that allows you to find arrows easily. For example, the ground should be a level, trimmed lawn, not an overgrown field full of holes.
Check Your Equipment
Before you begin shooting, you always need to check your equipment. Accidents are more likely to happen if your equipment is broken or damaged. ArcheryBuff.com recommends keeping your bow waxed and dry, and replacing your bowstring when it begins to fray. Your arrows need to be in good condition as well. According to ThinkQuest.org, arrows are dangerous if they are cracked or not straight.
Obey Whistles and Archery Etiquette
Archery ranges have standard whistle commands to control shooting as safely as possible. Basic Archery Rules states one whistle blast means you can shoot, two blasts means you can approach the shooting line and three blasts means you can go get the arrows you have shot. In addition to following whistle commands, you should also use your own common sense when waiting, firing and retrieving arrows. Never load your arrow onto your bow when there are people in front of you, and never stand in front of a loaded bow. Shoot only when you are certain the range is clear, and only retrieve your arrows when you are certain no one is shooting.
