Common Kidney Cancer Symptoms

The kidneys are two organs shaped like beans that are about the size of the human fist. The kidneys are located on the right and left sides of the spine, behind the abdominal organs. The kidneys function as filters to remove toxins from the body. Renal cell carcinoma is the most common type of kidney cancer in a human being. The less common cancer that affects the ureters, is called transitional cell carcinoma. A type of kidney cancer found primarily in children is called nephroblastoma or Wilms' tumor. Kidney cancers often are found inadvertently while testing for other problems because kidney cancer lacks pronounced symptoms in its early stages.

Bloody Urine

Blood in the urine occurs late in kidney cancer and may appear as pink or a dark brown color. This symptom is serious and may contribute to significant anemia, which is a low red blood cell count. Red cells are needed to carry oxygen throughout the body. While urine may change colors because of many things including what a person eats or drinks and as a side effect of medications, if the urine is dark or pink, the Mayo Clinic recommends seeking medical attention.

Back Pain

Pain is another indicator of kidney cancer. This pain occurs in the person's back, usually near the location of the kidneys. It also is known as flank pain because it occurs in the flank area of the back. Pain also may occur under the ribs. It does not go away without pain-relieving medication.

Weight Loss

The person suffering with kidney cancer may begin to lose weight without attempting to do so. This weight loss occurs because of the increased enzyme activities within the kidney. This may be sparked by kidney tissue being damaged by the cancer. Enzymes are released from the kidney that increase the body's metabolism. He also may lose his appetite because of the pain and discomfort of kidney cancer.

Fatigue

Fatigue is a common symptom with many diseases. The body's defenses are altered as it attempts to fight the disease. Fatigue also may be a sign that the red blood cell count has lowered. Fatigue is a feeling of weakness throughout a person's body, often brought about through over-exertion. When fatigue occurs without physical or mental activity that is strenuous, it can be a side effect from medications or a symptom of diseases such as kidney cancer.

Fever

Fevers may come and go repeatedly with kidney cancer. Because kidneys help the body fight infection by ridding it of toxins, infections can occur when these organs are not functioning properly.
