Herbs can be effective to strengthen your immune system and ward off the negative effects of infections and diseases. Used by humanity across the globe, there are several more prominent herbs used to boost immune function. Among these, echinacea is found in North America, ashwaghandha is native to Africa and India and astragalus is the preferred choice of traditional Chinese medicine. Each of these are readily available for your use today, and are each equally beneficial to your immune system.

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is an ayurvedic herb central to the ancient Indian healing art form. Ayurvedic teaching purports the use of this herb, and N.C. State says studies have indicated its anti-stress and antioxidant properties. Additionally, the university reports that the herb is said to strengthen the immune system and promote overall well-being. Traditionally, according to the University of Michigan's Health System, the root of this herb was used medicinally and is found in India and Africa.

Echinacea

Echinacea is native to North America and used traditionally to fight colds, the flu, sore throats and other minor infections. Echinacea works by stimulating your immune system, thereby promoting T-cell activation. T-cells are those responsible for fighting infection in your body. Although beneficial for general immune system strengthening, echinacea is not recommended for those with autoimmune diseases such as HIV or multiple sclerosis.

Astragalus

Used in traditional Chinese medicine, astragalus is used to strengthen the body's ability to ward off disease. Also an adaptogen, it also fortifies your body's ability to mange physical, mental and emotional stressors. The University of Maryland Medical Center reports that the herb may be effective as a preventative medicine for cancer and diabetes. As immune system support, astragalus prevents upper respiratory infections, lowers blood pressure and protects the liver.
