Adrenal function affects almost every system in the body. From blood sugar levels to mood, from immune system balance to athletic performance, the function of these small glands impacts your day-to-day health. Specific vitamins show promise in supporting adrenal function and should be considered during times of increased stress or adrenal dysfunction.
Vitamin B5
Experts such as Dr Michael Lam have long listed Vitamin B5, also known as pantothenic acid, as one of the most important nutrients in supporting adrenal function. The enzymes that produce adrenal hormones, such as DHEA or cortisol, depend on availability of Vitamin B5 to do so. In episodes of adrenal fatigue or increased adrenal load, the requirements for this B vitamin increase dramatically. A dose of 600 to 1,200 milligrams per day may be suggested for therapeutic purposes.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C remains one of the most important antioxidants in the body. The adrenal glands stand out as one of the heaviest users of this water-soluble vitamin and, as a result, requirements may be substantially increased when the adrenal glands experience a heavy load. Doctors such as Dr. Rodger Murphree suggest between 1,800 and 10,000 mg of Vitamin C each day. Some individuals require more than others, and requirements will likely change in line with the load on the adrenals.
Other Nutrients
While experts do not dispute the importance of both Vitamin B5 and Vitamin C in supporting the adrenal glands, few would base their recommendations on these two nutrients alone. Dr. James Wilson, one of the more prominent doctors in the field of adrenal health, suggests treatment that involves adrenal extracts, magnesium, licorice root, adaptogenic herbs like ashwaganda and a collection of trace minerals. Dr. Lam recommends supplements such as hydrolyzed collagen to nourish the body, and items such as liposomal glutathione and d-ribose to improve cellular function .
