Herbs can provide a safe, natural way to get rid of mucus and phlegm in the lungs, both as a result from infection and when due to a chronic condition such as asthma. In addition, several herbs, when taken regularly, serve to strengthen and support the lungs and help prevent respiratory infections and allergies.
Elecampane
Elecampane is widely considered to be a beneficial lung tonic, both cleansing and strengthening the lungs. Not only an expectorant, elecampane also has antibacterial, antifungal and antiparasitic activities, making it especially beneficial for treating respiratory infections. Elecampane is commonly used to treat bronchitis, asthma, sinus infections and allergies. Using decoctions made from the root, elecampane combines well with other respiratory herbs for both relief from acute symptoms or for a general strengthening lung tonic.
Coltsfoot
Coltsfoot is a strong expectorant as well as a phlegm-reducer and antispasmodic. The flowers of coltsfoot are considered to be especially useful for treating chronic coughs with profuse phlegm and for stubborn, irritating coughs. Decoctions and tinctures are made from both the flowers and leaves, and syrups made from the flowers are prescribed for dry coughs. As a treatment for chronic coughs, coltsfoot combines well with elecampane.
Mullein
The flowers and leaves of mullein are strong expectorants, used primarily for treating hard, dry coughs. The flowers are also anti-inflammatory, and you can use them for throat inflammations or make them into a syrup that is especially soothing for coughs. Tinctures made from both flowers and leaves are commonly used for chronic coughs, especially when presenting with feverish chills. Be careful to keep hydrated when using mullein, as it is a mild diuretic.
Marshmallow
Marshmallow has strong anti-inflammatory as well as expectorant qualities. Infusions made from the leaves or decoctions made from the roots are used to reduce the severity of dry, unproductive coughs and soothe inflamed and irritated lungs. It works well in combination with stronger expectorants like mullein and coltsfoot, as well as in restorative tonics with elecampane. Marshmallow is especially effective in treating bronchitis.
Hyssop
The leaves and small purple flowers of hyssop are traditionally used to clear the lungs of thin, watery phlegm. A warming expectorant, hyssop works well to treat bronchitis and asthma, and is often taken in the first stages of colds and flus to reduce the severity of symptoms. You can make tea from the aerial parts, or use tinctures or syrups instead. Hyssop combines well with other expectorant herbs such as mullein and elecampane.
