Astragalus is the primary herb used in traditional Chinese medicine to tonify the immune system and is considered an adaptogen. Adaptogen herbs improve the body's ability to adapt to stress, according to "The Dictionary of Modern Herbalism" by Scott Mills. Only the root of astragalus in the second and third year of growth is used as medicine and it has a sweet taste. Astragalus' constituents extract better in water than in alcohol, making teas, infusions and decoctions the preferred means of consumption.
Astragalus Tea
Make astragalus tea by chopping fresh or dry herbs and steeping it in boiling water for five minutes. It is a safe herb and can be taken daily for extended periods of time and according to herbalist Rich Cech in his book "Making Plant Medicine," astragalus has even been used to recover from radiation and chemotherapy.
The University of Maryland Medical Center cautions against using astragalus while taking immunosuppressant drugs such as cyclophosphamide. These drugs are usually prescribed to reduce the chances of the body rejecting a transplant and since astragalus helps build the immune system, its use may cause complications in such operations.
Astragalus Decoction
Make an astragalus decoction by adding up to 30 g of astragalus root to a medium-sized pot of boiling filtered water. Let the herb simmer under medium heat for 20 to 25 minutes. Strain it and drink throughout the day.
Traditional Chinese medicine uses astragalus decoctions to treat spleen energy deficiency with symptoms of prolapse of internal organs, low and weak metabolism, and edema, according to acupuncturist Michael Tierra in his book "The Way of Chinese Herbs."
Astragalus as Food
Astragalus can be used as food. Cook astragalus root with vegetables in a broth or a soup. You can also chew fresh astragalus roots immediately after they have been dug, however, they will be very fibrous and by simply chewing on astragalus you will not be getting its full medicinal spectrum.
Astragalus Infusion
Use astragalus to make an infusion by taking 1/4 cup of dry or fresh root and adding a quart of boiling water. Let the herb infuse overnight and drink your infusion throughout the day to support your health.
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, recent research shows that astragalus can be used as an antioxidant to protect cells against free radical damage.
