Homeopathic medicine was created by German physician Samuel Hahnemann in 1796. It is based on three principles: that like cures like; that the smaller the dilution, the more effective the remedy; and that one remedy can cure any number of symptoms. Using homeopathic remedies requires you to be much more involved in the healing process than conventional Western medicine. There is scant scientific proof that taking homeopathic cures is more effective than placebos, but anecdotal evidence suggests that using homeopathic methods does have a positive effect on many ailments.

Step 1

Find a homeopathic practitioner in your area and make an appointment to see her. Over-the-counter homeopathics are not always your best choice because "headache," for example, means different things to different people. An experienced practitioner will need to know all of the details of your ailment before suggesting a remedy.

Step 2

Brush your teeth at least 20 minutes before taking your homeopathic remedy. Rinse your mouth well, because toothpaste can interfere with absorption of the remedy.

Step 3

Place the homeopathic pill or drops under your tongue and let it dissolve naturally. If you are giving homeopathic pills to a young child, crush them between two spoons and dissolve them in a little purified, cool water.

Step 4

Wait at least 5 minutes before taking a second remedy, if your practitioner has given you more than one kind of homeopathic dilution.

Step 5

Let the remedy do its work for at least 15 to 20 minutes before eating or drinking.

Step 6

Repeat the dosage according to your practitioner's recommendations. Stop taking the remedy when the symptoms disappear.

Tips and Warnings

  • Always tell all medical practitioners what medications or remedies you are already using.
  • Do not smoke for at least 20 minutes before taking a homeopathic remedy because this can interfere with absorption.
