Babies may not rely on their vision until many weeks after their birth, but their eyes continue to develop during this time, reaching full development after about two years, according to the University of Illinois. Eye infections, called conjunctivitis or "pink eye," may occur in infants, and can result from a blocked tear duct, bacteria or a virus. In most cases, the pediatrician will prescribe eye drops to resolve the condition. Knowing the symptoms will help new parents recognize when their baby may have an eye infection.

Redness

Infants with an eye infection will often have redness in the white of the eye. Depending on the extent of the infection, the white of the eye may only have a small amount of redness, or significantly more. The redness does not damage the delicate eye of the infant, but the red appearance may give the first indication that the baby has an eye infection. Mild redness that does not accompany any other symptoms may resolve within a few days. In newborns, mild redness may also result from a drop of silver nitrate often administered to the infant's eyes shortly after birth.

Drainage

Eye infections may also cause the eyes to drain, and the drainage may have a thick, mucous-like texture, or may also look like tears. If the matter dries on the baby's eyelids, her eyelids may appear sticky. Additionally, if the matter dries on the eyelids, particularly while sleeping, the baby may not be able to open her eyes. Wet a washcloth with warm water and hold it gently against the baby's eyelids. When the dried matter loosens, it should wipe away easily with the cloth.

Eyelids

The infection may cause swollen, inflamed eyelids. In order to ease the tenderness from swollen eyelids, a cool, damp washcloth against the eyes may help relieve some discomfort. In extreme cases, the pediatrician may prescribe an antibiotic to alleviate the swelling.
