A sore chest often accompanies a cold with a deep, constant cough. There are several home remedies to ease the pain, allowing you to get some rest. These remedies can help with the symptoms that make colds uncomfortable, but will not cure the underlying problem. If your cough lasts for more than a week, produces discolored mucus or is accompanied by a fever, go to a doctor immediately.

Mustard Plaster

A mustard plaster is a common home remedy for a cough and really relaxes your tight, sore chest muscles. Mix one part medicinal dry mustard powder, which is available at most drugstores and natural food stores, with two parts all-purpose flour. Add just enough water to make a paste and smear the plaster in an even layer on one side of a cotton or flannel cloth. Fold the cloth in half, with the plaster on the inside, and place it on your chest. Cover up with a warm blanket and allow the plaster to heat your chest. Check under the cloth every 15 minutes or so to make sure your skin isn't becoming red or irritated by the plaster.

Peppermint Rub

A peppermint rub can clear the irritating mucus from your chest and nose, quelling your cough. The mint also relieves pain by relaxing your chest muscles. Mix one cup of warm almond oil with 1/2 tsp. of peppermint oil and massage the rub into your chest and back. For a congestion-fighting boost, cover yourself with a warm blanket and sip peppermint tea throughout the day.

Onion Poultice

An onion poultice is an old-fashioned remedy for respiratory infections. The strong scent of onions loosens stubborn chest phlegm, which can help a sore chest feel better. Thinly slice a large onion and fry it in a skillet until it's soft and fragrant. Wrap the onions in a flannel cloth, grease your chest lightly with olive oil and place the onion poultice directly on your chest. Cover up with a warm blanket to keep the poultice warm.

Hot Toddy

A hot toddy soothes deep coughs, allowing you to get some rest and giving your chest muscles a break. Squeeze two lemons into a saucepan, and add 1/4 cup of honey. Bring the honey and lemon mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally, then let it cool for about five minutes. Add about 1 oz. of rum to the mixture and stir to combine. Take 1 tbsp. of the mixture every hour or so until your symptoms are lessened. If it tastes too strong, you can mix a dose of the hot toddy with a cup of hot tea.
