Off-road bikes are made for adventures on dirt roads and trails. They are maneuverable enough to easily clear obstacles other bikes cannot. Their tires provide great traction on dirt and other types of rough terrain. They can be very light, some being as little as 150 pounds, and have small engines. They are not necessarily designed for street riding, so they often do not have required equipment to be ridden on regular surface streets. They are popular for recreational use and competitive sports events. You want this type of bike only for off-road riding. Be certain this is your intended purpose before buying a motocross bike.
What to Look for
Like any other big product, even for the smaller motocross bike, do your homework. Go to the Internet and check the different sites that offer motocross bikes. Do some reading and check out customer reviews or online forums if the site offers them. This will help you in choosing the right bike for you. Know everything you need to know about the bike to get the one you want from a dealership or through an online site. You can save hundreds of dollars by buying online, but often the online sites don't offer the variety you can find at a dealership. Prices for motocross bikes can be anywhere from $1,300 to $6,000. If you go to a dealership, check out last year's models, just as you would when buying a car. You could get a great deal for a bike that is just as operable and durable as the latest model. If you can negotiate the price, you might walk away with a better deal than you thought. Remember, the sales people want to sell the bike as much as you want to buy one. Bikes in high demand may be offered at a high price, with a little chance of bringing the price down. A bike in low demand might bring you a good bargain. You might fine an unbelievable price online, but study it carefully. Make sure it is from a reputable company. It if is a good site, it will have advice, testimonials and forums for previous and current customers.
Make sure you take the bike to a mechanic if you're buying a used one so that you don't get one that will fall apart on you within a month. Also, examine the bike closely for scratches and dents. Even though motocross bikes are usually driven in rough terrains and will have some battle scars, rusty chains and worn out tires are not part of that and it might mean the previous owner didn't take good care of the bike.
Common Pitfalls
You can use an old bike for a trade-in, just as you do when purchasing a car. You should know the value of your old bike before getting into any discussions with a salesperson. There are books and websites that provide information on selling and trading in bikes. But, like with cars, you often make more money selling the bike yourself. Use the money for the purchase of your new bike.
It's not a great idea to buy a motocross bike in the summer time because that's when everybody wants to get one, which will inflate the price you pay. It's better to be early and look for one in the fall when demand is low and prices drop.
