When a woman is nearing labor, her cervix will begin to dilate and thin. She will also begin experiencing regular contractions that get closer together and stronger over time. When things seem to have stalled, there are a number of natural methods to try to progress labor. These methods are not as effective in inducing labor as they are in helping the body continue doing what it has already started.

Walk

Walking is just one way to encourage the baby's weight to press down on the cervix. The jostling of the baby can also help thin the cervix and help it open wider. Walking eases labor pains and helps pass the time. Women who are in active labor, meaning their contractions have started, should walk with assistance in case they begin to fall.

Change Positions

Laboring flat on the back is not the most effective position. Sometimes this is all that is allowed in the birthing facility after an epidural has been administered. Women should ask the overseeing health care provider if turning, or other positions, can be attempted. When an epidural has not been administered, a woman should try as many positions as she feels comfortable trying. Incorporating a birthing ball, rocking chair, squat bar, or even taking a bath during the labor process can help accelerate it. Any comfortable position that helps open the pelvis and puts the weight of the baby downward and forward should be encouraged. These positions use gravity and the weight of the baby to the fullest.

Intercourse

Intercourse may stimulate contractions if the woman has an orgasm. Sperm contains prostaglandins, which are hormones that can thin and dilate the cervix. If a woman has already lost the mucus plug, sex should be avoided. This method of progressing labor is best used before contractions have even started, such as when a woman has reached her due date without any obvious signs of labor.

Evening Primrose Oil

WhattoExpect.com explains that evening primrose oil is an herb recommended by many midwives. It can be taken orally or inserted into the vagina to promote cervical ripening. This method should only be attempted under the advice of a medical professional. Women with existing pregnancy complications should not use this labor progressing technique.

Bowel Stimulation

Eating spicy foods or taking a dose of castor oil may upset the stomach and cause intestinal contractions. This can lead to uterine contractions as well. Women who are already experiencing labor contractions should not attempt this method of speeding things along.

Acupuncture and Acupressure

A trained professional can administer acupuncture or acupressure to progress labor. There are certain spots on the body near the wrist and the ankle that can promote contractions. If the body is not already preparing for labor, such methods may have little effect.

Nipple Stimulation

Nipple stimulation can lead to the production of oxytocin, according to the American Pregnancy Association. This hormone can cause contractions. Nipple stimulation can be achieved manually or with an electric breastfeeding pump.

Relaxation

Any relaxation techniques can help a woman's labor progress. She can receive a massage, rest or find a comfortable position and just breathe. Not only can such relaxation methods help a woman relax her pelvis and surrounding muscles, but it can also give the woman more strength to endure more laboring and pushing.
