Colon cleansing is often prescribed by doctors in order for patients to prepare for procedures such as colonoscopies. Colon cleansing products claim to serve other purposes, such as weight loss, improving the immune system and removing toxins in the gastrointestinal tract. Not only does the digestive system already naturally eliminate bacteria and waste, but Consumer Reports Health states that there is also insufficient evidence that colon cleansers are effective, or safe for general health.
Dehydration
Colon cleansing products claim to get rid of bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract, but these products also flush out necessary salt and water. This results in dehydration. Consumer Reports Health states that colon cleansing products can cause a fluid loss and electrolyte imbalances. Eating fruits and vegetables and getting regular exercise, which keeps the colon working properly with less risk of dehydration, can improve colon health.
No Weight Loss
Some colon cleansing products imply that users will experience a weight loss boost. Nutrition specialist Dr. Madelyn Fernstorm recommends against any products that claim to provide weight loss with no lifestyle change. Weight lost during colon cleansing is fluid elimination, and without lifestyle changes, such as dieting and exercising, the weight returns almost immediately.
Death
According to the American Cancer Society, colon cleansing is sometimes used as a method of cancer treatment. Coffee or water enemas are performed when a colon therapist inserts plastic tubes into the colon and pumps in up to 20 gallons of liquid. The waste and fluid are then carried out in another tube. The American Cancer Society does not encourage this method of treatment. There is a risk of contaminated equipment, punctures of the intestinal wall that can lead to infection or death, and death due to electrolyte depletion.
Other Problems
Dr. Fernstorm states that colon cleansing can cause overall discomfort including fatigue and cramping. Some colon cleansing products have herbal supplements that may not be regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and could interact with other medications. Laxatives in colon cleansing products can raise electrolyte levels, which is dangerous for those suffering from kidney or heart disease. Frequent use of colon cleansers can also prevent normal bowel elimination.
